THE SCROLL OF HONOUR

The Habitat Scroll of Honour award was launched by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in 1989. It is currently the most prestigious human settlements award in the world. Its aim is to acknowledge initiatives which have made outstanding contributions in various fields such as shelter provision, highlighting the plight of the homeless, leadership in post conflict reconstruction, and developing and improving the human settlements and the quality of urban life.

The award, a plaque engraved with the name of the winner and their achievement will be presented to the winners during the global observances of World Habitat Day on 2 October 2006.

THE DUBAI MUNICIPALITY AWARDS

Best Practices are outstanding contributions to improving the living environment. They are defined by the United Nations and the international community at large as successful initiatives which:

- Have a demonstrable and tangible impact on improving people"s quality of life;

- Are the result of effective partnerships between the public, private and civic sectors of society;

- Are socially, culturally, economically and environmentally sustainable.

THE WORLD HABITAT AWARDS

The World Habitat Awards were established in 1985 by the Building and Social Housing Foundation as part of its contribution to the United Nations International Year of Shelter for the Homeless.

Two awards are given annually to projects from the global north as well as the south that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems.

Every year an award of £10,000 is presented to each of the two winners at the annual United Nations global celebration of World Habitat Day. Travel and accommodation costs are also met for one representative of each winning project to attend the awards ceremony.
